Established by Sarah J Miller in 2000 and based in Edinburgh, i am sjm* is a highly successful business selling both handcrafted fine porcelain pieces and teaching people the art of ceramics.

 

​History

Sarah spent the last year of her first degree at Iowa State University where she took a ceramics course alongside her academic studies and developed a love for the craft, spending all her free time in their studio. On her return home, the love she had developed for clay led her to attend Falmouth College of Arts on their Ceramics programme.

Upon finishing her time in Cornwall, Sarah moved to London and founded i am sjm* in a studio at Cockpit Arms, Holborn. In 2015 i am sjm* became a limited company under the name i am sjm limited.

It's all in the name

The name came after creating a series of beakers as a gift for her grieving friend. These beakers all had phrases on them that began "i am...", so instead of having to answer difficult questions, everyone could see how her friend was feeling based on which beaker they were drinking from.

These beakers were made of porcelain and whilst crafting them Sarah found she loved the texture and temperamentality of the clay. She began experimenting, aiming to reach the translucency that was promised from porcelain, and this is how the name and signature fine porcelain decorations were born.

Today

A sudden change in circumstances meant i am sjm* experienced a 10 year break, but as of Spring 2026 Sarah has relocated to her home city of Edinburgh to bring the business back to life.
